IELTS, TOEFL and English Requirements for International Students

IELTS and TOEFL requirements vary by university and programme. Learn how to choose the correct test, check component scores and avoid common application mistakes.

IELTS, TOEFL and English Requirements for International Students

A university’s English requirement is rarely as simple as “take IELTS” or “get a TOEFL score.”

One programme may accept several tests. Another may ask for a minimum overall result plus separate scores in writing, speaking, reading and listening. Some universities accept previous education taught in English. Others still require a formal test.

Before paying for an examination, find the exact requirement for your programme, intake and applicant category.

Start with the programme page

Do not begin by asking which English test is generally “better.” Begin with the universities you intend to apply to.

For every programme, record:

  • Accepted English tests
  • Required overall score
  • Minimum score for each component
  • Test version or delivery method accepted
  • Maximum age of the result
  • Whether official scores must come from the test provider
  • Whether an exemption is possible
  • Conditions attached to conditional admission
  • Any separate immigration requirement

Check the programme page, not only a general university admissions page. Nursing, education, journalism and other communication-heavy programmes may apply higher component requirements than the university’s general minimum.

If the information is unclear, ask admissions in writing. State the full programme name, degree level and intended intake.

IELTS Academic or General Training?

For most university-degree applications, the relevant examination is IELTS Academic, not IELTS General Training. You must still confirm what your institution accepts.

Both versions assess Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking. Listening and Speaking are the same in IELTS Academic and General Training, but the Reading and Writing sections differ. IELTS Academic uses tasks designed for higher-education contexts. IELTS explains the test formats.

IELTS results are reported in bands. Universities may set an overall band, a minimum for every component, or a higher requirement for one skill. An applicant can reach the required overall band and still be ineligible because one component is too low.

How long is an IELTS result valid?

IELTS recommends treating results as valid for two years from the test date. An organisation can choose to accept an older result, but that is its own decision. Check the official IELTS scoring guidance.

Your result is recorded on a Test Report Form, which may be issued on paper or digitally. Institutions can verify it through the IELTS Results Service. IELTS explains how results are shared.

Plan the test so that your result remains acceptable when the university reviews it. The application deadline alone may not be the relevant date.

IELTS One Skill Retake

IELTS One Skill Retake allows an eligible candidate to repeat one component instead of the complete examination.

The original test must have been IELTS on computer at a centre offering the service. The retake must be completed within 60 days, and only one skill can be retaken once for that original test. Review the current IELTS One Skill Retake rules.

The service’s availability does not mean your chosen university accepts the result. Confirm acceptance before booking.

TOEFL iBT in 2026

TOEFL iBT evaluates Reading, Listening, Speaking and Writing. It can be taken at an authorised test centre, while ETS also offers a monitored Home Edition. Universities decide which delivery methods they accept. See the official TOEFL iBT format.

A major scoring change took effect on 21 January 2026. TOEFL iBT now reports overall and section performance on a 1–6 scale, in half-band increments.

During the two-year transition, score reports also provide the CEFR level, the new 1–6 overall and section scores, and a comparable total on the former 0–120 scale.

Universities may display the new scale, the former scale or both, so applicants should check which version applies to their test date. Read the official TOEFL score-scale update.

Do not rely on an old screenshot that only mentions the 0–120 scale.

How long is a TOEFL score valid?

TOEFL iBT scores remain valid for two years from the test date. ETS does not report or send them after that period.

ETS also advises applicants to check whether a university accepts MyBest scores, which combine a candidate’s strongest section results from valid test dates. Acceptance is decided by the institution. See ETS guidance on TOEFL scores.

IELTS and TOEFL: practical comparison

  • Skills: Both assess listening, reading, writing and speaking.
  • Speaking: IELTS uses spoken interaction with an examiner; TOEFL responses are recorded through the test system.
  • Scoring: IELTS uses band scores. TOEFL tests from 21 January 2026 use the new 1–6 scale with transitional comparable reporting.
  • Delivery: Availability varies by location and product. Universities decide which methods they accept.
  • Validity: IELTS recommends two years; TOEFL scores are valid for two years.
  • Final acceptance: The university and, where relevant, immigration authority decide.

Choose according to the programme’s rules and the format in which you perform best. Neither test automatically produces easier admission.

Can previous education in English replace a test?

Sometimes, but not automatically.

A university might consider a degree completed entirely in English, a secondary-school qualification taught in English, a recognised English-language qualification, a medium of instruction letter, an interview or internal assessment.

A medium of instruction letter confirms that a previous programme was taught in English. It is evidence, not a universal waiver. The university may restrict waivers by country, institution, qualification age or degree level.

If you request an exemption, ask whether your exact qualification is eligible, which document must be submitted, whether the exemption covers admission only, and whether separate visa evidence is still required.

Admission requirements and visa requirements are separate

A test accepted by a university is not automatically accepted for immigration.

The United Kingdom illustrates this distinction clearly. For degree-level study, a higher-education provider may assess English itself, but the required level must still be equivalent to CEFR B2. Other applicants may need an approved Secure English Language Test or another permitted form of evidence. Review the UK Student visa English rules.

Where a UK SELT is required, the test must come from an approved provider, be taken at an approved location and normally have been awarded within two years of the visa application. See the current approved SELT guidance.

Do not assume that ordinary IELTS Academic and IELTS for UKVI are interchangeable for every purpose.

Conditional admission

Some universities issue conditional offers to applicants who have not yet met the English requirement.

The offer should explain the result you must obtain, the deadline, whether a pre-sessional English course is available, any extra costs, and what happens if the condition is not met.

A conditional offer is not unconditional admission. It also does not guarantee a visa.

When should you take the test?

Work backwards from the university deadline. Leave time for preparation, test availability, results, score delivery, a possible retake and the university’s review period.

Check the identification rules before registration. The name used for the examination should match the identity document and university application.

Mistakes that cause avoidable problems

  • Booking before checking acceptance
  • Looking only at the overall score
  • Using an expired result
  • Assuming a waiver
  • Confusing admission with immigration
  • Sending an unofficial screenshot
  • Using an outdated TOEFL scale

Final checklist

Before registering, confirm that the university accepts the test and delivery method, you know the overall and component requirements, the result will remain valid, you understand official score delivery, you checked possible waivers and separate visa rules, your name matches your identification, and you have allowed time for a retake.

Unirovia can help students compare published English requirements and organise their application documents. The university decides admission and exemptions; immigration authorities decide visa requirements.

Verify official requirements

Information can change. Verify official requirements before making a decision.
